Adult hosts include foxes, dogs, cats, cattle, white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and humans – humans are attacked by all 3 stages. Anaplasmosis and Ehrlichiosis: The symptoms of ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis typically start 7 to 14 days after an infec-tious tick bite. Nymphs get on many of these same animals, as well as larger animals typical for adults. Lone Star Tick American Dog Tick Nymph and Adult Adult Only. Small animal larval hosts include the gray fox, cottontail rabbit, striped skunk, raccoon, cotton rat, gray squirrel, cat, and ground nesting birds. A favorite habitat of the lone star tick is the woods to lawn or meadow transitional zone. Black-legged ticks, sometimes called deer ticks, are responsible for spreading Lyme disease, babesiosis, anaplasmosis, Borrelia miyamotoi, and Powassan virus. A relative humidity of greater than 65 percent is required for egg hatch and larval survival until host attachment. Deer ticks and dog ticks are found throughout Massachusetts Lone Star ticks are also found in some places in Massachusetts. The habitat must also contain both small animal hosts for larvae and large animal hosts for adults. Lone star ticks cannot survive long exposure to the sun and are therefore typically found in shaded areas. While larvae are almost entirely dependent on this behavior, nymphs and adults may become stimulated by the warmth and carbon dioxide from a host spending considerable time in the area and will drop to the ground, find the host, and climb onto it. These ticks usually contact a host by crawling up on the tips of low-growing vegetation and waiting for a host to pass by and brush the vegetation. Similar to the Blacklegged Deer Tick, these ticks have 6 legs as larvae but have 8 legs when they are nymphs and adults. They are flat and oval in shape, and usually brown with whitish-gray markings. Plus, they can easily end up transported and inside homes, hiding in pantries and cupboards. The lone star tick is a 3-host tick, with each stage requiring a different host. American Dog Ticks have a dark brown body with females having an off-white scutum (dorsal shield), while adult males look more mottled. When this happens, they can end up in food preparation areas or restaurants, retail outlets or throughout hotels, hospitals and other areas with large kitchens. There are also White-marked spider beetles and the Smooth spider beetle.įor the most part, they are not considered a serious pest, but given the right conditions, spider beetles can become numerous and their tendency to eat large amounts of food stuff make them a nuisance. The most common types of spider beetles in North America is the Mezium americanum, or American Spider Beetle. Deer ticks, or blacklegged ticks, are blood-sucking insects that are about the size of a sesame seed and have eight black legs. Lone star ticks are similar in body size when compared to other ticks like the American dog tick Dermacentor variabilis, and the brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus Latreille, but are larger than the blacklegged tick or deer tick, Ixodes scapularis Say. Spider beetles also have round bodies with a smooth carapace, or outer shell, which adds to the spider-like appearance. Ticks are most active in the spring and fall, so it is especially important to keep your dogs out of the brush during these times of year and keep your lawn mowed short to deter ticks from moving in. They have only six legs, however, although there are two long extensions near their head which resemble legs, making many people think they are spiders and not beetles. To keep deer ticks off your dog, start by avoiding prime tick habitats, such as woods and fields with tall grasses. Spider beetles are tiny insects that do in fact look very much like tiny spiders – however are totally harmless to humans.
